KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A provincial governor says at least 53 people, including nine attackers, have been killed in a daylong gunbattle in western Afghanistan.
Officials say the fighting broke out Wednesday after suicide bombers disguised as Afghan soldiers stormed a courthouse in Farah province in a failed bid to free more than a dozen Taliban.
Provincial Gov. Akram Akhpewak says those killed included 34 civilians, 10 security forces and nine attackers.
Error led to early release for suspected killer of Colorado prison chief
DENVER (Reuters) - A white supremacist parolee suspected of killing Colorado's prisons chief and a pizza delivery man last month had been mistakenly released from prison in January - four years early - due to a clerical error, court officials said on Monday. Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, was killed in a roadside gun battle with police following a high-speed chase in Texas, two days after the March 19 killing of Tom Clements, executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Yuichiro Miura climbed to the summit of the 8,850 metre (29,035 ft) mountain in 2003 and 2008. He skied down Everest from an altitude of 8,000 metres (26,246 ft) in 1970.
Google says to shut down YouTube in early April Fools' gag
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc, getting a head start on the annual tradition of April Fools' pranks, released a YouTube clip on Sunday declaring that the world's most popular video website will shut down at the stroke of midnight. The "hands-free" video game is played by directing oneself right or left in the urinals at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs' Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The game is aimed at increasing prostate health awareness.

New York cop who toured with band charged with disability fraud
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York police officer was charged on Tuesday with mail fraud for allegedly claiming disability benefits for two years while at the same time performing and touring with his heavy metal band, "Cousin Sleaze," according to court documents. Christopher Inserra, an officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was the lead singer with the Brooklyn band, whose "Sick Maniacs" album features such songs as "Infection" and "Walk of Shame," according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn.

Behind it in second place with close to 18% of the vote was Android sleep and lifestyle tracker Sleepbot. Just behind it in third place was one of the first (and still one of the best) sleep tracking apps for Android, Sleep As Android, with over 16% of the votes cast. Hot on its heels with just shy of 16% was the FitBit One sleep and activity tracking gadget, and bringing up the rear was the Jawbone Up, with over 10% of the vote.

Jessie Rodriguez was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Gina Presley.

A 42-year-old Illinois man was given a $10 million bail Sunday after he was charged in the death of a 3-year-old girl in Oak Forest, according to police.
Jessie Rodriguez was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Gina Presley, Oak Forest police said Saturday.
Police escorted a man out of the hearing after he began screaming that Rodriguez did not deserve bail.

Rodriguez, the boyfriend of Gina?s aunt and guardian, without justification killed the 3-year-old girl with blunt for trauma to the head, police said.
Another ?person of interest? originally taken into custody was released and is cooperating with the investigation, officials said.
Rodriguez has been in custody since Thursday, but did not appear in bond court today despite police indications.
An adult in Gina?s home in the 15300 block of Walnut Road in Oak Forest reportedly called 911 to report the young girl was choking. She was later pronounced dead at Palos Community Hospital.
The Illinois Department for Children and Family services said Gina was never in their custody, despite reports from Oak Forest police that said she was.
?This is not consolation for the family or the community and only begins to provide a response to such a horrific act,? Chief of Police Gregory Anderson said in a statement.

LA JOLLA, Calif., April 1, 2013 Scientists at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) have identified how an enzyme called PKC? suppresses prostate tumor formation. The finding, which also describes a molecular chain of events that controls cell growth and metastasis, could lead to novel ways to control disease progression.
Working in close collaboration, the labs of Maria T. Diaz-Meco, Ph.D., and Jorge Moscat, Ph.D., found that PKC? controls the activation of a pro-tumor gene called c-Myc. Normally, PKC?'s alteration keeps c-Myc in check. But PKC? levels are low in prostate and other cancers, leaving c-Myc free to enhance cell growth and metastasis. This study, published April 1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that restoring PKC? could provide a new approach to treating prostate cancer.
How PKC? acts as a prostate tumor suppressor
Previous studies suggested that PKC? might act as a tumor suppressorbut that wasn't clear in the case of prostate cancer. In their study, the team learned of PKC?'s role after genetically engineering mice so they lacked the enzyme altogether.
"In this study, we assessed the role of PKC? in prostate cancer, and for the first time we used a knockout mouse for PKC? to demonstrate that it's actually a tumor suppressor," Diaz-Meco said. "But, I think the major advance in this paper is that we found out how PKC? is a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer."
In their study, the researchers found that PKC? suppresses tumors in cooperation with a gene called PTEN. PTEN has been long known to act as a tumor suppressor, and it's also well-established that its mutated form is common in prostate cancer.
But the loss of normal PTEN function alone doesn't lead to aggressive prostate cancer. According to this study, the loss of PKC? and the resulting over-active c-Myc are also needed for aggressive prostate cancer to develop.
Potential approaches toward attacking prostate cancer may in the future involve activating PKC? through gene therapy, or dealing with its inaction downstreamperhaps by finding another way to inhibit c-Myc in the absence of PKC?.
